Nickel-molybdenum alloy Hastelloy B-2 has very low carbon and silicon content, which reduces the precipitation of carbon and other impurity phases in the welding heat affected zone, so its weld also has sufficient corrosion resistance. Hastelloy B-2 has excellent corrosion resistance in reducing media, such as hydrochloric acid solutions at various temperatures and concentrations. In a medium concentration of sulfuric acid solution (or containing a certain amount of chloride ions) also has good corrosion resistance. It can also be used in acetic and phosphoric acid environments.

Hastelloy B-3 is a nickel-molybdenum alloy with excellent salt acid resistance at all concentrations and temperatures. It can also withstand sulfuric acid, acetic acid, formic acid and phosphoric acid, as well as other non-oxidizing media. B-3 alloys have a special chemical composition designed to achieve higher thermal stability than B-2 alloys, making them easier to manufacture.

Since the alloy does not contain significant chromium additives, it should not be used in oxidizing media or in the presence of oxidizing salts such as iron or copper salts. The latter may form when iron or copper is present in a system containing hydrochloric acid. Similarly, alloy B-3 cannot withstand wet chlorine or hypochlorite bleach.
